This is the rarest natural hair colour in the WORLD! Only 1-2% of the population are naturally red haired. It is caused by a recessive mutation in the MC1R gene on chromosome 16, which results in higher levels of the pigment pheomelanin and lower levels of eumelanin often causing pale skin, freckles and a higher sensitivity to UV light.
